Club Meeting – May 31 – 7pm with Sarah & Jeff Milisen

Please join us for Wednesday’s club meeting & learn about Blackwater diving from Kona Honu Divers’ Sarah & Jeff Milisen.
Time: May 31, 2023 07:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada)
Meeting ID: 813 3467 0968
Passcode: 326183
Sarah & Jeff will present about diving in Hawaii, and particularly Blackwater diving. Blackwater diving is a unique night dive which will take you miles offshore where you will hang, suspended from a 60ft tether, over 4000ft of water to watch open ocean, or pelagic, animals drift by. You’ll have the opportunity to see animals ranging from perfectly clear larval fish and invertebrates to siphonophores, and even cephalopods out in the deep. If you want to observe something you have never seen before, this is the dive for you. Our divemasters are still surprised by new and exciting creatures in the deep.
Dive Instructor Sarah Milisen logged over 4,000 dives in the last 9 years in Kona. In 2021, she had the amazing opportunity to help clean up the oceans in a huge way – by working with NOAA’s Marine Debris project, involving a 30-day mission to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands to clean up a staggering 123,690lb of marine debris!
Jeff is an underwater photographer and marine bio mega-nerd with a penchant for odd jobs in exotic and remote environments. For the past decade, I’ve spent every Friday night drifting around the middle of the Pacific looking for sea monsters, which led me to write a book called “A Field Guide to Blackwater Diving in Hawaii.”
